Abduqadir Abdurrahman, a Uyghur man, was sentenced to 19 years in prison after attempting to flee China in 2015. At the time of his arrest, he was 25 years old. He tried to leave the country through Yunnan province in southern China, aiming to reach South Asia, but was caught by police. A policeman from Piyalma township in Guma county, Abdurrahman’s hometown, confirmed that he was apprehended and later sentenced after being returned to Hotan prefecture in Xinjiang. In addition to the 14 years for attempting to flee, Abdurrahman received five years for “illegal marriage” after marrying his wife in a traditional Islamic ceremony conducted by an imam during their journey.
